Six Championship Events
At the SCL National Championships, teams compete across individual, pair, and team formats. In every event, individuals, pairs, or teams earn Meet Points based on placement. Those points combine to determine the overall championship standings.
3×3 Individual — Each student independently solves three 3×3 cubes consecutively.
3×3 Pair Blindfold — Working in pairs, one student solves two 3×3 cubes while blindfolded, as the other gives verbal instructions.
2×2 Team — The entire team works simultaneously to solve ten 2×2 cubes.
3×3 Team — The entire team works simultaneously to solve ten 3×3 cubes.
Rotating Puzzle Team — Each season features a different puzzle. For 2027, the team will solve ten Pyraminxes simultaneously.
Mixed Puzzle Team — The team works simultaneously to solve four 2×2 cubes, four 3×3 cubes, and two Pyraminxes.

Championship Puzzles
SCL provides identical puzzles for every competitor at the Championships. Online Contest competitors use their own puzzles.
Championship Solving Procedure
Puzzles start covered by a cloth, removed after the timer starts.
Pair BLD: the blindfolded teammate starts and stops the timer.
For team events, the captain starts and stops the timer while other teammates keep their hands outside the puzzle area.
A neutral boundary separates the timer from the puzzle area. Solved puzzles must be returned to the puzzle area to count.

Participation
What are the three ways to participate?
Online Contests are daily competitions open to everyone. Leagues organize school competition across a season. The 2027 Championships bring elementary, middle school, and high school teams together in Las Vegas.
Do I need to belong to a school to enter an Online Contest?
No. Online Contests are open to everyone. All competitors appear in one combined leaderboard with no divisions. A verified SCL account is required to submit a result.
Does my student need a WCA ID to compete in SCL?
No. A WCA ID may be added to an SCL account profile, but it is not required to participate.
Is SCL affiliated with or endorsed by the WCA?
No. SCL is an independent organization, not a WCA program or affiliate. Experience from the WCA and the broader cubing community informs SCL, but the WCA does not operate, sanction, or endorse it.
Leagues and schools
How does a school join a league?
An SCL administrator creates the league. A League Director organizes each season and invites schools to participate.
Where do I form and manage my school roster?
Use the School Workspace. A School Organizer can create a school, add or remove members, and invite other organizers. Squads and competition lineups are managed after the school joins a league.
How many students can belong to a school roster?
School membership is not capped. For each league event window, a competing Varsity or Junior Varsity squad selects a lineup of three to five school members.
What is the difference between Varsity and Junior Varsity?
A school may enter one Varsity squad for head-to-head matchups and may enter multiple Junior Varsity squads. Junior Varsity squads are ranked independently using Meet Points.
Can students change squads?
Yes. Students may change squads between event windows, but a student cannot represent multiple squads for the same school in the same event window.
Can a school participate in more than one league?
Yes. A school may join multiple leagues. Within each league season, it participates once and receives at most one conference assignment.
2027 Championship registration
Who may compete at the 2027 Championships?
The Championships are open to Elementary, Middle School, and High School teams. Elementary covers grades K–6, Middle School covers grades 5–8, and High School covers grades 9–12. Contact SCL if your school does not divide grades cleanly along those lines.
How do championship divisions work?
Elementary, Middle School, and High School compete in separate fields and have separate finals. Prizes are awarded within each division.
How many students are on a championship team?
Championship teams have three students.
Can our school register more than one championship team?
Yes. Each registered championship team is identified separately by a nickname or an assigned label such as Team A or Team B.
How much does championship registration cost?
$175 per student when the team registers by December 15, 2026, and $250 per student afterward.
When does a championship team pay?
After SCL reviews and approves the registration, the team representative can pay securely from My Registrations. The team appears publicly after payment is confirmed.
Puzzles
Do Online Contest competitors use their own puzzles?
Yes. Online Contests are completed remotely, so competitors use their own puzzles.
Are puzzles provided at the Championships?
Yes. SCL provides identical puzzles for every competitor at the 2027 Championships.
Which puzzles are used at the Championships?
For 2027, SCL uses the MoYu RS3 M V5 MagLev Ball-Core UV for 3x3, the QiYi M Pro Magnetic Ball-Core for 2x2, and the MoYu WeiLong Magnetic for Pyraminx.
