I’ve been quite touched by the support that I’ve received after launching Scholastic Cube League. Now that we’ve been live for one week, I’ve had a chance to synthesize some feedback, and we’re planning to announce several major changes.
High school students are invited
The first change is that the 2027 Championships will now be open to high school students as well. I have another significant announcement I will be making next week that will explain why we are expanding to high school. For now, if you are a high school cuber and you would like to participate, put together your team. We’ll see you in Las Vegas.
Championship teams of three
The second change is also related to the 2027 Championships. We have decided to make the team size three students instead of three to five students. While this will also be tied to the significant announcement I will be making next week, it is also as a result of receiving feedback from the community. It is clear that it would be significantly easier for schools to form teams if they only had to field a roster of three students. We want to make the first championships as accessible to as many schools as possible, and we think this team size will make it easier. If schools have more cubers, they will be able to register multiple teams.
On the subject of accessibility, I’ve received a number of emails from people who are asking about teams formed by students who are participating in a homeschooling program. Philosophically, we would like to accommodate these students, but we could use help from the homeschooling community to figure out how to implement this. Feel free to reach out if you would like to contribute.
Updated championship events
The third change is to the event list for the 2027 Championships. As a result of reducing the team size down from five students to three, we are also appropriately adjusting the events. The 3x3 individual solve will now require students to solve three cubes consecutively instead of five. Team events will have ten puzzles being solved. Pair blindfold will be two attempts per team, with all three members of the team being required to participate at least once. For more details on these changes, please see the regulations.
Online Contests every day
Finally, we have also decided to update the format of the online competition. The online competition is no longer called the Sunday Contest. Instead, it is a daily contest where you can submit your results every day and see where you place on the leaderboard. We received a lot of feedback from cubers who expressed that they wanted the opportunity to practice every day. We have also decided to aggregate the results across all divisions in the online contest. The 2027 Championships will have awards for the three divisions separately.
I hope these changes will make it easier for people to send a team to Las Vegas and also provide more opportunities for people to have fun and practice. Stay tuned next week as we have another major announcement coming.
